The Summer Mission of Our Lady of the Magnificat was established in 1920 when much of Ocean Beach remained dunes and marshland. In 1921, a simple frame church was constructed – the church that still stands today through decades of stormy wind, high water, winter snows and summer heat.
Later, the original rooftop cupola was replaced with a New England style steeple. A navigational aide and local landmark, the steeple is a favorite feature of the “skyline” of this unique island community.
Weddings and wakes and everything in between have taken place in this place and the church has welcomed generations of Fire Islanders to pray, to reflect, to give thanks, and to celebrate.
As the church approaches its 100th anniversary of its founding and construction, a Centennial Committee has been formed to renew and prepare the church for the celebrations.
As you will see in this brochure, the church needs new siding and critical repair work on its steeple.
We invite a new generation of Fire Islanders to demonstrate the same confidence and commitment of those first arrivals to this beautiful place. Together, we can make certain that this beautiful building and its mission will stand through the next 100 years!
God bless you,
Msgr. Richard Henning
