The Summer Mission of Our Lady of the Magnificat was established in 1920 when much of Ocean Beach was dunes and marshland. In 1921, a simple frame church was constructed – the same church that still stands today after decades of stormy winds, high water, winter snows and summer heat.
Later, the original rooftop cupola was replaced with a New England style steeple. A navigational aide and local landmark, the steeple is a favorite feature of the “skyline” of our unique island community.
Baptisms, weddings, wakes and everything in between have taken place in this church that has welcomed generations of Fire Islanders to pray, reflect, give thanks, and celebrate.
We are joyfully preparing for our 100th Anniversary as a parish and look forward to several opportunities to celebrate together.
Everyone who sees the beautiful work that has been done on our church exterior and interior is deeply moved and grateful. Now, we turn our maintenance eyes towards the rectory that houses the priests that come to serve our parish. To preserve the rectory and provide for priest coverage, serious maintenance and repair work is needed. We invite a new generation of Fire Islanders to demonstrate the same confidence and commitment to our parish as the generations that came before. Together, we can ensure that this beautiful parish and its mission will stand through the next 100 years!
